Sharad Pawar has filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the Election Commission’s order favoring his nephew

By

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) founder Sharad Pawar has lodged an appeal in the Supreme Court against the Election Commission’s (EC) decision in February, which acknowledged the faction led by his nephew Ajit Pawar as the legitimate party.

The EC had allocated the NCP symbol ‘wall clock’ to Ajit Pawar’s group, aiming to resolve internal party conflicts. Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has already submitted a caveat through advocate Abhikalp Pratap Singh, urging the court to consider his stance before issuing any orders in Sharad Pawar’s petition.

The Commission determined in favor of Ajit Pawar, who had aligned with the ruling coalition government, after assessing the party’s constitution and gauging majority support. The appeal was filed by Sharad Pawar shortly before the Supreme Court’s deadline for Maharashtra Speaker Rahul Narwekar to adjudicate on disqualification petitions against Ajit Pawar’s faction, extended to February 15, 2024.
